Lacquerware is arguably one of the most famous traditional crafts in Myanmar as its production requires a hot and humid climate. There are many steps involved in creating high-quality lacquer involving a large amount of time, patience and planning to ensure the sourcing and creation process is done to the highest standard. Each piece takes 9 months in the making.

Master lacquer artist Veronica Gritsenko has been working together with local lacquer families in Bagan for the past 15 years to improve the quality, processes and inspire contemporary design in traditional lacquerware products.

According to Myanmar tradition, only men can design lacquerware. However, Veronica challenges this idea by training local women on quality craftsmanship while encouraging design confidence.

Each piece from Black Elephant features a unique design and is made using the highest quality materials and processes.
